A03 → Circulatory Valve

A Gathering Point by the Seekonk River

A valve controls the passage of substances through an opening. When applied to the architectural language of this project, it utilizes slippage to create openings in surfaces and dictates movement between spaces.
1/F - The form of the boathouses in plan gestures a receiving of the two channels above and below: the flow of traffic and pedestrians, and the flow of the river and boats, respectively.
2/F - The enclosed spaces above also separate the observation deck from the noises and view of the street.
Using red and blue to denote between the “wetness” of program also helps establish an order between the two aforementioned channels. Just like a tap manages the output temperature, this building controls the nature of flow.

Gestures explored in identifying a topic of interest from the experience of rowing a boat. After choosing the idea of “catching,” the many ways it could be physically represented were recorded in video.

Modeling and drawing of a metaphor: using light as a stand-in for water, the catch and release that one associates with rowing is now applied to how a curved wall receives light at one end and disperses it another way.
